About the Foundation

The Amber and Adam Tarshis Foundation is a non-profit research organization dedicated to developing innovative and humane solutions for animal population management. Our mission is to advance scientific research that promotes the well-being of companion and wild animal populations worldwide. We are a passionate, collaborative team of scientists committed to making a tangible impact through cutting-edge biotechnology.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative recent PhD graduate to join our research and development team as a Scientist I. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design, construction, and characterization of novel viral vectors for use as immunocontraceptive vaccines. This is a hands-on, lab-based position that offers a unique opportunity to apply your doctoral training to a mission-driven project with real-world applications in animal welfare.

This role is ideal for a candidate with a strong background in virology, molecular biology, or vaccine immunology who is eager to learn and contribute in a dynamic research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and construct recombinant viral vectors using modern molecular cloning techniques, including homologous recombination, Gibson assembly, and CRISPR/Cas9.
  • Perform viral work, including maintenance of mammalian cell lines, generation of stable producer lines, propagation and purification of viral stocks, titration using standard assays (e.g., plaque assay, TCID50), and characterization of recombinant viruses and vaccine candidates through molecular and cellular assays (PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence microscopy).
  • Assess in vivo antibody production using ELISAs and PRNTs, including designing and optimizing custom ELISAs.
  • Meticulously document all experiments and results in an electronic lab notebook.
  • Analyze data, interpret results, and troubleshoot experiments independently and in collaboration with the team.
  • Present research findings at internal lab meetings and contribute to scientific publications and reports.
  • Stay current with relevant scientific literature to inform experimental design and strategy.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Virology, Molecular Biology, Immunology or a closely related field. Recent graduates (0–2 years of postdoctoral experience) are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Hands-on experience with standard molecular and cellular biology techniques, including mammalian cell culture, Western blotting, plasmid design, PCR, and DNA cloning. Direct experience with homologous recombination or BAC systems is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a scientific team.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in core virology techniques, including virus production, purification, and quantification (e.g., TCID50 and plaque assay).
  • Familiarity with DNA viruses, particularly Poxviruses and/or Herpesviruses.
  • Proficiency in antibody characterization, including binding assays (e.g., ELISA, flow cytometry, SPR) to assess antibody affinity, specificity, and function.
  • Experience with in vivo models or live-animal vaccine trials.
  • Interest in /experience with reproductive endocrinology research.
  • Experience with grant writing.

Work Environment

  • This position is 100% on-site at our laboratory facility located just outside of downtown Los Angeles.
  • The role requires the ability to work in a BSL-2 laboratory environment and adhere to all safety protocols.
  • All employees must be up to date with standard workplace vaccinations in accordance with institutional and public health guidelines.
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $80,000 - $90,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
  • Bonus: Target annual bonus of 10%.
  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Retirement: 401(k).
