Core facility scientist

Rutgers University

  • Lab Technician
  • Research Scientist
Job Type/Arrangement:
  • Full Time

The Rutgers CryoEM & Nanoimaging Facility serves as a university-wide resource for the imaging and three-dimensional reconstruction of cells and biomolecules. Special areas of interest include: virus/antibody interactions; intracellular trafficking and uncoating of viruses; protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases; and bacterial gene expression.

As the senior staff member in the core facility reporting to the director, the researcher will interface with a variety of laboratories (both intramural, extramural academic, and industrial) to apply cryoelectron microscopy (cryoEM) techniques to fundamental questions in biology being investigated by these laboratories. The researcher will perform and document cutting-edge cryoEM experiments with limited supervision. Experiments include: cryo-transmission electron microscopy and tomography, cryo-focused ion beam milling, correlative microscopy, vitrification, cryo-scanning electron microscopy, and classical electron microscopy including thin section TEM. Experiments include computational analysis using field-appropriate tools such as EMAN2 and RELION. The researcher will liaise directly with other laboratories to help them understand the experimental results and collaboratively plan ways to overcome technical hurdles. The researcher will be involved in a large number of projects proceeding in parallel and will allocate time and resources appropriately. This position will be based in Piscataway but will require occasional work in Newark (approx. 1 day per month).

Experience with cryo-EM is strongly preferred. Experience with electron microscope alignment and operation is highly desirable. Familiarity with command line tools is highly desirable, and experience with shell scripting is preferred. Experience with imaging technologies is highly desirable. Experience with biochemistry and molecular biology techniques is preferred.
