Description:

Job Summary. The Oberstein lab in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the College of Medicine at UIC (http://microbiology.uic.edu/oberstein.html) is looking for a motivated post-doctoral candidate to contribute to our research program in molecular virology. Our research combines experimental virology, computation, and biochemistry to investigate cellular mechanisms enabling and restricting human herpesviruses. We are seeking a unique scientist to work on new, high-risk/high-reward projects being initiated in our lab; such as (1) detection and isolation of rare virally infected cell populations, or (2) creation of novel oncolytic herpesviruses with enhanced cancer-cell specificity. The optimal candidate will be highly-self motivated, passionate, and interested in developing new techniques for studying viruses and biological systems. Creativity, work ethic, and rapid learning are favored attributes, in addition to demonstrated research proficiency.

Duties

    • Work with Principle Investigator to design and develop research projects.

    • Maintain at least two independent research projects simultaneously.

    • Conduct research experiments, including complex data collection and analysis.

    • Prepare and maintain reagent and biological stocks.

    • Test, optimize, and troubleshoot new and existing methods and techniques.

    • Maintain digital and hard-copy records of experimental history, protocols, and results.

    • Prepare scientific results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or grant applications.

    • Communicate results at internal and external scientific conferences.

    • Assist in the training of graduate students and research staff.

Qualifications

    • PhD degree (within 5 years) in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field.

    • At least one (two preferable) first authored, peer-reviewed, publication.

    • Knowledge of basic experimental design (e.g. controls) and statistics.

    • Required: experience in basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, Western blotting, cloning, basic microbiology), fluorescence microscopy, and mammalian cell culture.

    • Desirable: experience in chemical biology, protein purification, or CRISPR-Cas9.

    • Computer proficiency: MS-word/excel required; proficiency in R and Linux desirable.

To Apply: Applicants should email a single pdf file containing a cover letter with brief description of research experience and future interests, curriculum vitae, and list of three references. Send to aoberste@uic.edu.
