Battelle is seeking a Lead Virologist/Biologist IV (Site Lead) to support the mission of the CDC Vaccine Preparedness Team (VPT) within the Virology, Surveillance, and Diagnosis Branch (VSDB), which is responsible for the generation of vaccines to protect the public from emerging/pandemic viruses.

Under the supervision of the VPT Team Lead, the successful candidate will lead a special team to generate Candidate Vaccine Viruses (CVVs) in compliance with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulatory requirements and World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. The applicant will be self-motivated, a proven team leader and must have strong expertise in molecular virology and/or classical virology. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in reverse genetics of influenza viruses, working with respiratory viruses in Biosafety Level 3 environments, GLP laboratories, and/or the use of laboratory animals (e.g., mice or ferrets). The position is in Battelle's West Jefferson laboratories (Columbus, OH area).


Lead a team of researchers for Candidate Vaccine Viruses (CVV) production in compliance with FDA GLP regulatory requirements and WHO recommendations.

Manage technical quality, business ethics and staff performance to attain high quality research and development work. Develop, implement and respond to quality assurance and control policies.

Must have sufficient communication skills to effectively interact with top management internally and within client organization, consultants, and staff. Requires critical human relation skills to understand, select, develop, and motivate others. Requires evidenced ability to lead others in the achievement of goals.

Participate in the selection, training, development, and motivation of staff to establish and maintain a quality operation with a focus on the needs, goals, and deliverables of the client.

Develop and maintain client relationships to ensure communications are open and consistent.

Maintain a high level of client involvement to remain sensitive to client needs and respond in a timely manner.

Collaborate and follow direction from VPT Team Lead and VSDB leadership to produce GLP-CVVs within requested timeline.

Engineer, troubleshoot and rescue CVVs from cell cultures using reverse genetics technology in compliance with GLP guidelines.

Propagate and characterize CVVs by genomic, virological, and immunological analyses.

Meet urgent demands of mitigating emerging influenza viruses with pandemic potential.

Maintain organization and proficiency in Biosafety Level 3 laboratory.

Clearly and consistently communicate progress orally and in writing with technical monitor and other researchers.

Assist the technical monitor with preparation of reports, presentations, and papers for publication in scientific journals.

Ensure team members adhere to GLP regulations, biosafety regulations, and other regulations.

DoD Secret clearance will be required post hire.

Education Requirement:
PhD, MD or DVM
Years of Experience:
5-10 yrs supervising a research laboratory, with two or more research papers published as corresponding author

PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent plus more than 5 years of relevant experience in Virology

5-10 years of experience supervising a research laboratory

US Citizen. Post hire a DoD Secret clearance.

Expertise with influenza virus in cell cultures and animal models. Strong knowledge in immunology is desired.
