The Wylie lab studies host-microbiome interactions during pregnancy, with particular emphasis on viruses. We recently found that higher eukaryotic viral diversity throughout pregnancy is associated with preterm birth (Wylie KM, et al. Am J Obstet Gynecol, PMID: 29738749). The viruses detected included herpesviruses, papillomaviruses, and others. Our goals are to understand virus and host response dynamics during pregnancy and to determine the mechanisms underlying the association between viral diversity and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We carry out studies in human cohorts and in vitro models of virus infection. We use genomics, virology, and molecular biology assays for our work.
