Division of AIDS

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking exceptional and motivated leaders to serve as physicians within the Division of AIDS (DAIDS). DAIDS supports a global research portfolio to advance knowledge critical to the treatment and/or prevention of HIV and its related infectious (e.g., tuberculosis and hepatitis B) and non-infectious co-morbidities. DAIDS develops and supports the infrastructure and biomedical research needed to 1) halt the spread of HIV through the development of an effective vaccine and biomedical prevention strategies that are safe and desirable, 2) develop novel approaches for the treatment and cure of HIV infection, and 3) treat and/or prevent HIV co-infections and co-morbidities of greatest significance.

The physicians will have a wide range of responsibilities relating to the oversight of a major extramural clinical research program in HIV/AIDS and related conditions. Duties include identification of research gaps and opportunities (diagnostics/biomarkers, drugs/biologics, vaccines), translation of new preclinical tools and interventions into clinical use; development of the clinical research agenda;  design, review, and approval of trial protocols; and oversight of the implementation of ongoing trials, including the safety and welfare of participants. The physician will have responsibilities for study data interpretation, presentation, and publication of results. The large majority of these trials are performed in the DAIDS-funded HIV/AIDS clinical trials networks.
