Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer)

Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

National Institutes of Health

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking exceptional applicants with diverse skill sets in product development to serve as a program officer in the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID). DMID supports extramural research to control and prevent diseases caused by virtually all human infectious agents except HIV and directs a program of research grants and contracts in microbiology and infectious diseases.

The program officer will manage a portfolio that contains the discovery, development, and life cycle management of candidate coronavirus vaccine and therapeutic products. This position will provide program management support for discovery, preclinical and clinical product development activities, partnering with external collaborators as well as internal groups. The program officer will support execution of program plans and serve as a key interface between a number of cross-functional areas within NIAID and with other U.S. government agencies. As such, prior project management experience with the process and stages of vaccine and therapeutic product development, from discovery/preclinical through late stage development, is a critical skill. This position is integral in providing support for strategic development plans, nonclinical study conduct, and recommendations for logistical coordination of nonclinical studies with clinical trials. This program officer position is critical to the division in ensuring that nonclinical studies are done in a manner that will be acceptable to the FDA and can be used to support product licensure.

•    Areas of expertise: virology, immunology, bioengineering, or molecular biology

•    Experience with vaccines and/or therapeutics

•    Experience in vaccine and/or therapeutic product development

•    Strong relationship building, communications, and management skills

•    Experience managing government/non-government projects and working with multi-institution teams (academic, public, and private sector organizations)

•    Strong oral and technical/medical writing capability

•    Demonstrated attention to detail

•    Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment

•    Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines

Candidates must be U.S. citizens and demonstrate that they have worked independently in planning, organizing, and conducting biomedical health-related research and served effectively in research program administration in these fields.

An experienced candidate with viral preclinical expertise in drug and/or vaccine development is preferred.
