Ph.D., D.V.M, M.D., or equivalent
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The Laboratory of Virology in the Division of Intramural Research within NIAID seeks an outstanding scientist to serve as a tenure-track/tenure-eligible investigator at NIAID’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana.
Situated in the scenic Bitterroot Valley of southwestern Montana, with easy access to some of the finest outdoor recreational opportunities in North America, RML has state-of-the-art facilities that include an operational biosafety level (BSL)-3 facility, a BSL-4 laboratory, and an animal facility that can accommodate work with small animal, nonhuman primate, and small livestock models, as well as core facilities for genomics, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and bioinformatics.
The Laboratory of Virology (LV) conducts high-impact, innovative basic and translational research on viral agents requiring high or maximum containment with the goal of developing diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics. Fundamental experimental approaches of the laboratory include molecular-, cellular-, immunological-, and aerobiology-based techniques, along with animal models of pathogenesis, transmission, and countermeasure development.
The research conducted in LV includes studies of vector/reservoir transmission, molecular biology, pathogenesis, and host immune response of high- or maximum-containment viral pathogens. LV prioritizes diversity and inclusion as a centerpiece of the team’s culture. See more information about LV.
The selected candidate is expected to implement and direct a vigorous, independent research program that includes basic and/or translational virology in one of the following research areas: molecular biology, immunology, structural biology, molecular pathogenesis, or countermeasure development. Preference will be given to candidates with virologic research requiring high or maximum containment or a strong commitment to developing a research program including high- or maximum-containment virology research. Independent resources are committed to the position, including space, support personnel, and an annual budget for services, supplies, and salaries. Facilities at existing NIAID international sites in Africa and Asia may be available to the incumbent.
