Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (T/TT), MizzouForward, Center for Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases

Job Description

The University of Missouri – Columbia (MU) seeks applications and nominations for outstanding faculty candidates with a focus on Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases. This appointment is part of MizzouForward, the most important strategic investment to achieve research excellence and student success in the history of the university.  This initiative will leverage existing institutional strengths and address national health and scientific priority areas through innovation and collaboration.  See more about this transformational effort here

University of Missouri Center for Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases (MU CIEID) is a newly founded campus-wide center under the administration of the Division of Research, Innovation & Impact (RII). The mission of this Center is to develop and apply systems biology based translational approaches to counteract influenza and emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases. MU CIEID is pursuing a cluster hire of open-ranked faculty positions across multidisciplinary infectious disease areas, such as virology, immunology, epidemiology, systems biology, and glycobiology. The research efforts for these new hires would center around influenza and other emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases.

The MU campus includes a number of highly dynamic and collaborative units that contribute to infectious disease research, including: the School of Medicine, Department of Public Health, College of Engineering, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. The University of Missouri is one of only six schools in the United States that have a medical school, veterinary school, agriculture school, and extension program, making MU ideally suited for One Health and Precision Health research and education. Additionally, the University of Missouri has the Bond Life Sciences Center and the newly opened NextGen Precision Health Institute, which provides a new $221 million, cutting-edge research facility dedicated to solving the most pressing health concerns.

A large ABSL-2 animal facility is established and dedicated for CIEID research to study influenza, infectious disease transmission and vaccinology using various animal models, especially swine. This facility is equipped to test vaccine efficacy under a wide range of humidity and temperature parameters, mimicking important transmission conditions. In addition, the MU campus houses a BSL-3 and ABSL-3 facility at the Laboratory for Infectious Diseases Research (LIDR), which is a Regional Biocontainment Laboratory with approximately 32,403 gross square feet of research space. This facility is also approved for the use and storage of select agents and toxins. MU also houses two NIH funded swine centers (National Swine Resource and Research Center and Swine Somatic Genome Editing Center). The NIH funded Mutant Mouse and Rat Resource & Research Centers and state-of-the-art campus supported core facilities, such as Advanced Light Microscopy Core, Animal Modeling Core, Bioinformatics and Analytics Core, Cell & Immunobiology Core, Cognitive Neuroscience Systems Core, Electron Microscopy Core, Charles W. Gehrke Proteomics Center, Genomics Technology Core, Metabolomics Center, Molecular Interactions Core, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Core, and PET Imaging Center.

Minimum Qualification

  • An earned terminal degree in a discipline related to the hiring areas

Candidates will be evaluated on the following factors:

  • Track record of external research funding, particularly from federal agencies
  • Research agenda and accomplishments (e.g., publication record, number of citations)
  • National awards and honors, membership with national academies
  • Interdisciplinary orientation of their work
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Application

Review of applications will begin immediately, and candidate interviews will occur on a rolling basis throughout the academic year. Candidates across all academic ranks will be considered. Specific academic home(s) of candidates will be determined throughout the hiring process.
