Description:

The main responsibilities of RVDT are to develop cutting-edge diagnostic tests to identify respiratory viruses and monitor and characterize trends in non-influenza respiratory viral activity through U.S surveillance. This work will provide CDC and state public health labs with vital diagnostic tools central to public health and is expected to be disseminated to the scientific community by the publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals and ultimately contribute significantly to new scientific knowledge on the biology, natural history, and pathogenicity of all human respiratory viruses except influenza.

As a Senior Service Fellow (Research Microbiologist), you will:

Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct, and lead basic and applied research studies

Assist in, or plan/develop molecular detection assays, and procedures, for the analysis and detection for hRSV and other respiratory viruses to inform in the prevention and treatment measures.

Provide consultation and advice to the agency, both internal and external to DVD and to partners outside of the agency (e.g. WHO) in areas of personal research expertise which may also involve overseas travel to provide workshop training.

Participate in the development of policy and educational documents and on review and advisory panels and will prepare findings for publication or presentation at scientific meetings.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications

Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Or

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Agency Qualifications:

Doctoral level degree in the fields listed above;

One year of related postdoctoral experience at the next lower grade level related to the work of the position in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.

Highly qualified candidates would possess the following:

PhD.

Post-doctoral training is preferred or have sufficient qualifications in the field of virology to assist in leading the hRSV and other respiratory virus program both domestically and internationally.
