Description:

The CDC Foundation seeks a candidate for a Microbiologist position with special emphasis on Molecular virology to assist the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), Respiratory Viruses Branch (RVB) in conducting laboratory surveillance including diagnostics and characterization for preventing and controlling Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

This position is full-time, requiring 40 hours of work per week. The successful candidate will be a CDC Foundation field employee who works at the CDC’s Roybal campus in Atlanta, Georgia.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Apply specialized skills to conduct laboratory work including the following tasks:

Perform molecular virology studies on respiratory viral diseases, like RSV;

Accessioning specimens to extract RNA

Total nucleic acid extraction on a variety of extraction platforms

Running molecular assays such as real time PCR and molecular characterization using Sanger and NGS

Ability to troubleshoot molecular procedures (e.g. NGS, real-time PCR, RT-PCR), optimize, and conduct tree building

Compile a cohesive summary of results and generate result reports

     2. Perform molecular diagnostic testing and maintain testing systems and information in accordance with CLIA/CAP requirements

     3. Ability to effectively communicate with outside partners to explain processes for how we do procedures including

      a. documentation of protocol/ procedures and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs)

     4. Participate in the preparation of information for peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences and meetings

     5. Attend weekly team meetings, annual meetings, and other ad hoc meetings when necessary to provide information on current activities or to become familiar with current activities

 QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD or Masters level degree in microbiology, biology, public heath, or other related majors

2-3 years of experience with standard cell culture, molecular, and microbiological techniques

Documentation of daily work with good laboratory and CLIA practice compliance

Extensive experience writing or preparing project proposals, reports, research protocols and standard operating procedures

Strong teamwork skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint,

Extensive experience using genetic sequencing platform, Sanger or NGS preferred
