The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, Columbia University

Research Scientist

Director, Virology Platform

The Zuckerman Institute supports interdisciplinary neuroscience research and discovery by scientists and scholars across the University, and promises to be the most comprehensive Institute for brain science research. Located in the start-of-the-art Jerome L. Greene Science Center, world class researchers are brought together to transform our understanding of the brain and mind.

The Zuckerman Institute is seeking a highly motivated candidate to oversee and be the lead scientist of the Virology Platform. This Platform is focused on the generation and deployment of viral tools that support innovative neuroscience research. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in viral tools and will be both responsible for the development of new virologic techniques, and for virus production that will facilitate and advance research at the Zuckerman Institute.

Specifically, the candidate will possess a strong research background in the design and use of viral systems, such as AAV and Rabies, in the context of neuronal mapping, monitoring and manipulation. We expect the candidate to develop a program in the development of new viral techniques and methods in support of the advanced research conducted at the Zuckerman Institute. The candidate may be eligible to submit grants to support research centered on tool development that is aligned with the Institute’s scientific priorities. The candidate should also have hands-on expertise in viral production and the characterization and quality assessment of viral tools.

As the lead scientist of the Virology Platform, the scientist will also oversee the daily operations of that group, including training and managing research technicians and interacting with principal investigators at the Zuckerman Institute. Working with Institute leadership, the employee will establish and manage the budget for the core group and will participate in the educational, research and service programs of the Zuckerman Institute.

Required Experience:

Experience and expertise in viral production (ideally AAV, Rabies and Lentivirus).

Experience and expertise in the use of viral-based tools in neuroscience research.

A successful postdoctoral record with demonstrated experience in virology. In exceptional cases, a successful doctoral record may identify an extraordinary candidate.
