Postdoctoral fellow in Virology at UNC

Univ of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Categories:

Job Type/Arrangement:
  • Full Time
Description:

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Gralinski laboratory at UNC to investigate SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, focusing on coagulapathies and the role of clotting and wound healing pathways in the development of severe COVID-19. This project is part of a collaborative program working with Drs. Wolberg and Flick in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and UNC Blood Research Center. Individuals with experience in virology, immunology, or coagulation and host pathogenesis and an interest in interdisciplinary work to drive understanding in this exciting new frontier are encouraged to apply.

The Department of Epidemiology coronavirus research team uses emerging coronaviruses as models to study pathogenesis, virus-host interactions, genetics, and cross-species transmission as well as translational countermeasures. One of the most profound host responses in COVID-19 is a coagulopathy characterized by high rates of thrombosis. The long-term goal of this research program is to define the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking coagulation and fibrinolytic development of severe COVID-19 by using mouse models of disease.

We are seeking candidates with extensive immunological, virological and/or molecular biology experience who can drive their own experiments in laboratory. Work will center on the use of mouse-adapted SARS-CoV-2 in mouse models with coagulation/fibrinolytic factor deficiencies or functional alterations to characterize virus infection, host responses and changes in clinical coagulation readouts.

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Virology, Immunology and/or Microbiology and must be able to clearly communicate and present their research. Previous expertise in mouse models, mammalian tissue culture, molecular biology and a willingness to work at BSL3 are required for this position.

Previous experience with animal models of hemostasis/thrombosis or previous BSL3 experience is preferred but not required.
