Postdoctoral fellow in Host-Viral Interactions

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

  • Post Doctoral Position - Academic
Job Type/Arrangement:
  • Full Time

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the Orchard Lab at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. We are interested in understanding how viruses recognize and replicate within host cells, how the immune system thwarts viral invaders, and how viral immune antagonism genes function. We have been focused on Noroviruses, a common cause of diarrhea and notorious spoiler of cruise ship vacations. However, we are expanding our investigations to other RNA viruses including Influenza and Enteroviruses. We take a broad, multidisciplinary approach to science including biochemistry, viral genetics, CRISPR/Cas9 genetic screens, and in vivo mouse models. Examples of our publications include:

1. Orchard RC, Wilen CB, Doench JG, Baldridge MT, McCune BT, Lee YC, Lee S, Pruett-Miller SM, Nelson CA, Fremont DH, Virgin HW. Discovery of a proteinaceous cellular receptor for a norovirus. Science 2016. Aug 26;353(6302):933-6 doi: 10.1126/science.aaf1220 PMID: 27540007

2. Orchard RC, Sullender ME, Dunlap BF, Balce DR, Doench JG, Virgin HW. Identification of Antinorovirus Genes in Human Cells Using Genome-Wide CRISPR Activation Screening. Journal of Virology. 2018. Dec 10;93(1):e01324-18. doi: 10.1128/JVI.01324-18. PMID: 30305350.

Because of our scientific breadth, we highly value diverse scientific training and encourage applicants who are enthusiastic about our work to apply, even if your background isn’t with viruses. We are looking for highly motivated scientists who can merge their expertise with ours to do exciting and creative science. Interested applicants should send a brief cover letter and C.V. to Rob Orchard (
