The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a growing, vibrant, and successful centre of excellence in research and postgraduate teaching in the field of tropical medicine.
The Hughes group has two Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Postdoc) positions available in molecular virology to work on SARS-CoV-2 related projects.
The first position is a three-year post funded by a Strength in Places award examining SARS-CoV-2 persistence and transmission from surfaces to skin. The project will also examine the molecular response of skin to viral exposure, how resident skin microbiota influence viral infectivity, and how standard hygiene interventions inactivate the virus and prevent transmission.
The project is in collaboration with the industry partners - Unilever and Labskin - and there is capacity to establish further industry links.
The second position is a two-year post and combines two projects with similar research objectives. The projects are funded by UKRI and EPSRC and is a collaboration with the University of Liverpool and Gencoa. This research will examine the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces and how antiviral coatings on PPE and touchscreens reduce viral persistence and transmission.
Both projects have a dedicated technician to assist lab experiments and the PDRA would be instrumental in mentoring and planning the activities of these staff. Additionally, there would be scope for the PDRAs to develop their own projects related to these topics or to link with our other research interests in the lab. In general, the Hughes lab has broad research interests that examine host-microbe interactions with the overarching goal to develop novel approaches to control arbovirus transmission in mosquitoes. Collaborations between the two PDRAs would also be encouraged.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Produce reports detailing preliminary analysis outcomes
• Prepare results for submission to academic journals
• Present results at scientific meetings and consultations with external partners
• Develop partnerships with industry and undertake consultancy work.
• Train lab members and staff to work with pathogens at high containment levels (CL3).
• Apply for research grants/ fellowships in collaboration with PIs
The ideal candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral and cooperative member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will have well-developed research skills with the ability to effectively present research findings in oral and written format.
Ideally you will be able to demonstrate:
• PhD in virology or related field.
• Experience techniques and protocols to quantify infectious viruses.
• Experience with molecular techniques and approaches
• Experience working with pathogens in high containment levels or willingness to be trained.
