Description:

A Postdoctoral Research Scholar is sought to join Dr. Naim Montazeri’s Food and Environmental Virology Research Group within the University of Florida - Department of Food Science and Nutrition to address pressing issues concerning the impact of COVID-19 on the food sector. The position will be located at the UF main campus in Gainesville, FL. This is a full-time research position for one year with potential extension depending on the availability of funding. The anticipated start date is Jan 4, 2021 (earlier start dates are negotiable).

The selected candidate will participate in a collaborative project on rapid response to COVID-19 in food sector. The selected scholar will investigate the persistence and transfer of coronavirus (CoV) surrogates and SARS-CoV-2 on food and contact surfaces and implement effective virus mitigation strategies. The knowledge gleaned from experimental research will be translated into various educational resources and serve as a foundation of stakeholder engagement. The candidate will help mentor students, with project management, and proactively extend knowledge to stakeholders and the scientific community. Through this project, the candidate will acquire strong technical expertise in advanced microbiology and virology. Further training opportunities will be provided to develop a wide array of professional and personal skills, including mentorship, technical writing, project management, science communication, and career development.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in food science, microbiology, virology, or related field and have demonstrated microbiology skills, such as PCR, microbial purification/concentration, electrophoresis, cell culture, immunoassays, and experience working in BSL-2 laboratories. Experience in data analysis and working in BSL-3 laboratories are highly desired. Strong candidates will have a strong track record of articles published in peer-reviewed journals, written and oral communication skills, and project management experience. We recognize the candidates may have their own sets of skills in their field which may not completely match with the advertised position.
