Will contribute to the research, development and production of classical and innovative vaccines against swine viral diseases, plan/execute experiments, and develop/validate/perform assays related to swine vaccine R& D and production.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Follow the safety requirements of the Smithfield Injury Prevention System (SIPS).

Learn, understand, and implement all policies and procedures that relate to Biosecurity, EMS, SIPS, and lab policies.

Abide by all company policies, procedures and guidelines as directed by company leadership.

Work as a team player by accomplishing daily department work requirements and goals.

Assist with facility and equipment sanitation.

Work with laboratory equipment including but not limited to: Biosafety cabinet, fume hood, laminar flow hood, microscope, centrifuge, freezer, CO2 Incubator, Liquid Nitrogen Tank, Air Crimper, Tangential Flow Filtration System, Pipette Aid, Analytical Balance, Autoclave, RO Water System, Roller Rack Cell Culture System

Responsible for compliance with all environmental laws and procedures.

Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.

Read and understand the company’s emergency notification process and how it applies to their specific worksite.

Performs additional duties as defined by manager.

Work schedule may require flexibility including ability to work occasionally weekend days, holidays or evenings once candidate has demonstrated necessary technical ability.


Ph.D. in Biomedical or Biological Sciences or Microbiology, Master’s or Bachelor’s with sufficient experience will also be considered

>One year work experience in vaccine research, development, and/or vaccine production

Strong background in virology and/or vaccine development

Technical expertise in cell culture, cell-based assays, and vaccine development – specific assays including virus titration, real-time PCR, transfection, molecular virology, and ELISA

Experience with porcine viruses is a plus

Knowledge of vaccine GMP and scalable process development experience is a plus

Experience with generating and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOP)

Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously

Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment

Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Advanced computer knowledge (Microsoft Office)

Abilities Required:

Perform procedures involving biohazard and chemicals

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a limited basis.

Must be supportive of the mission of raising swine for human consumption of high quality pork products.

Perform tasks which may have objectionable odors

Must be able to work under pressure to accomplish a goal.

Must be able to work effectively with others in a team environment while being self-motivate and able to work independently.
