The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an exceptional and motivated leader to serve as a supervisory physician within the Allergy, Asthma, and Airway Biology Branch (AAABB) in the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT). DAIT supports basic and clinical research to improve our understanding of fundamental immunology and the causes of diseases such as food allergy, atopic dermatitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis to ultimately develop better diagnostic, treatment, and prevention strategies.
The supervisory physician will serve as the section chief for the Food Allergy, Atopic Dermatitis, and Allergic Mechanisms Section of AAABB. This section supports a robust clinical and basic research program focused on understanding the origin and mechanisms of food allergy and developing new approaches to treat and prevent food allergy, including food allergy-associated anaphylaxis and food allergy-associated eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease. The section also supports clinical and basic research aimed at determining immune and barrier abnormalities in atopic dermatitis, the role of the skin microbiome, and the relationship among atopic dermatitis, food allergy, and other atopic diseases. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on understanding the natural history of allergic diseases and developing new immune-based approaches to prevent and treat allergic diseases, including therapies that induce long-lasting tolerance.
This position has a wide range of responsibilities relating to the oversight of the section’s clinical research program. The candidate, in addition to supervising the stewardship of a large number of NIH grants, will be responsible for directing two clinical networks, the Consortium for Food Allergy Research (CoFAR) and the Atopic Dermatitis Research Network (ADRN), which have produced major research findings and have led to changes in guidelines for patient care. Additional duties include continuous evaluation of NIAID’s strategic goals in these fields by translating research outcomes into a long-term research agenda, development of clinical trial research concepts and protocols, oversight and coordination of active trials, data analysis and evaluation, and publication of results.

• Board certification in internal medicine or pediatrics
• Relevant training or board certification in allergic diseases
Candidates must have specialized experience and skills in the following fields:
• Knowledge of basic immunological mechanisms and their importance in immune-mediated diseases, including food allergy and atopic dermatitis
• Conduct and oversight of clinical trials, patient safety monitoring, and human research protections
• Clinical allergy and related conditions
• Analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of scientific and clinical data
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong scientific publication record, and ability to present research findings to internal and external audiences
• Translating research findings into scientific agendas and long-term strategic research plans
• Management to lead a diverse team of research scientists, nurse consultants, and physicians and establish collaborations with community stakeholders and academic, industry, and other federal partners
